The Notre Dame Hospice team is comprised of many volunteers, representing a wide variety of ages, cultural backgrounds and skill sets. This ever growing pool of resources provide care and comfort to our patients and families as well as administrative support to our staff. There is no minimum commitment of time and we welcome all people from all walks of life.
Here are some of the ways our volunteers support our program:
Providing Indirect care Services
- • Office support- filing, answering phone, mailings
- • Gardening
- • Massage
- • Crafts
- • Reading
- • Knitting/quilting crocheting
Providing Direct Care Services
Under the guidance and supervision of the Hospice Interdisciplinary Team many volunteers opt to work directly with our clients in 1:1 or group settings.
- • Visit and provide companionship
- • Specific tasks, prepare meals, run errands, read or help with household chores
- • Offering a supportive and caring presence to the patient and family
- • Respite for the family
- • Child Care, reading to the patient, playing cards/games
The Notre Dame Hospice Volunteer Program offers an extensive 32 hour educational program which provides the volunteer with an understanding of emotional, physical and spiritual stresses faced by the patients and their families. Because our volunteers have so many other commitments, we have made the orientation process as streamlined as possible to meet the needs of our generous volunteers. This orientation can be done as a self study, online, by book or within a structured group setting.
The joy that comes with giving to others is fully realized with our Hospice Volunteer Program. You gain new insights and understanding while enhancing your own sense of self. The opportunity to learn new skills that go to the core of human relationships and enjoy being part of a caring team is the return on the investment of your time.
The Notre Dame Hospice Volunteer Training program offers on going training, supervision, and support to ensure the success of everyone involved.
